Tide Riding

Should you wish to go exploring the estuary by yourself, there is the option of renting a kayak from the Aquamar Cooperative directly.

This Cooperative, renowned for the cultivation of oysters over the last 20 years, has recently been incorporated into NaturArte’s ecotouristic gallery in the ongoing search for increasingly diverse eco activities with minimal impact on the surrounding fragile environment. The cooperative rents kayaks, safety equipment and guides, and is completed by a large mural depicting the desired future of the estuary - the harmony between man and nature.

You can expect to see
• The beautiful environment of the estuary
• Herons, egrets, terns
• Fiddler crabs, blue crabs, fishes, and plants adapted to life in an unusually saline environment
• One of the highest tide movements in the world.

Requirements
• Between 12 and 60 years of age
(children under 12 years to be accompanied by an adult)
• Be in good health

Recommendations
Bring a sunhat, sunscreen, shoes and clothes that can get wet, a towel and a change of dry clothes. It is advisable to bring any cameras or binoculars in a plastic zip-lock bag.

Plan your travel in the knowledge that the hours during which the estuary is navigable by kayak are dependent entirely on the level of the tides.
